Mental health is about how we think, feel, and behave. One in four people in the general population in the UK may experience mental health problems at some point in their lives [Adult Psychiatric Morbidity in England (2007)], which can affect their daily life, relationships and / or physical health.

Mental health problems can affect anyone. Without accessing support and treatment, some mental health problems could lead to serious knock-on effects on the individual and on those around them.

Mental health disorders

Mental health disorders can take many different forms and affect people in many different ways. For example:

  • anxiety
  • phobias
  • depression
  • trauma
  • PTSD
  • OCD
  • psychosis
  • addictions
  • eating disorders
  • personality disorders

are all types of mental health problem. There is no single cause of mental health problems and the reasons they develop can be very complex.

Who is affected?

Mental health problems can develop as a result of difficult life events, such as moving house, relationship issues, losing your job, bereavement, plus also from work related experiences. Drinking excessive alcohol and using illegal drugs over a prolonged period can also contribute to mental health problems, particularly in people who are already vulnerable.
