Gardens blooming due to League of Friends Support page thumbnail

Stafford and Cannock League of Hospital Friends have generously supported a range of garden improvements at St George’s Hospital in Stafford.

Safe, attractive outdoor spaces are really important to the wellbeing of patients at the hospital. As well as communal areas, there are a number of dedicated gardens which aim to meet the particular needs of patients with dementia; mothers with babies; and those with eating disorders.

Working with Karen Fidgett, the Trust’s Patient Environment Lead, volunteers from the League of Friends have been busy enhancing the gardens at St Chad’s House by cutting back and tidying borders and flower beds and refreshing seating areas. They plan to continue with these projects whilst the good weather continues and start again in the spring time.

Tracey Thomas, Ward Manager, Baswich Ward said: “Having a beautiful garden to look out onto and a safe space to walk around or sit in is very therapeutic and provides a good opportunity for people to get fresh air and exercise, vital to our mental wellbeing. We really appreciate the help the League of Friends have given us to make the gardens such lovely places.”

Martin Thornley, Chief Executive of League of Friends added: “The League are delighted to be part of this project and we are pleased to continue to support the ongoing projects at St George’s Hospital to enhance patient wellbeing”.

Stafford & Cannock are celebrating their 60th Anniversary this year and have held a number of fundraising events to commemorate this special anniversary. Martin said “We are currently recruiting volunteers to work as part of a team in our coffee bars to help raise money for our local hospitals and also recruiting Trustees in order to ensure a balance of expertise on our Board of Trustees, this is a voluntary role. If you are interested in either of these roles please contact us on telephone number: 01785 250625 or email: enquiries@sclohf.co.uk
