What to expect at the first appointment
Consent is important when providing treatment for children so the adult with parental responsibility, or legal guardianship, will have to complete a form prior to treatment. If the adult with parental responsibility cannot attend the appointment a signed consent form electing another responsible adult such as a grandparent is required. This must be completed prior to the appointment in order to enable treatment to occur, failure to provide consent will result in your child's appointment being cancelled.
At the start of your child's appointment, the Podiatrist will ask about the reason for your referral, nature and severity of symptoms, duration, and any history of trauma.
We will also take a medical history including asking questions about any pre-existing conditions or medications your child may be taking. We will ask about development milestones and when these were achieved.
We recognise some children may have neurodiverse conditions and other needs that requires additional consideration. We always endeavour to accommodate children to ensure they are happy and comfortable in the clinical environment. Sometimes this may require a gradual approach with multiple appointments to enable the child to become used to their podiatrist and surroundings.
During the appointment, your podiatrist will carry out an examination on your child’s foot posture and gait. The Podiatrist will carry out a physical assessment which will consist of two parts: static and dynamic.
Dynamic assessment
Your child will be examined in a standing position and observed walking. If required we may use a pressure mat to analyse their walking pattern in more detail. Your child may also be asked to demonstrate balance and good foot positioning.
Static assessment
The couch-based part of the assessment will require your child to lie on an examination couch so that the lower limbs can be checked. This will involve assessing alignment, tightness in muscle groups and to further examine the feet whilst non-weight bearing.
