Referral criteria

Occupational Therapists support children and young people aged 0-19 years of age to participate in everyday activities (occupations) such as self-care, school tasks, play, and leisure.

Referrals should be based on functional difficulties that significantly impact the child’s ability to engage in daily activities, rather than solely on a diagnosis.

We accept referrals for children with a wide range of needs, including but not limited to:

  • Physical disabilities (e.g. Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, neuromuscular conditions, oncology, head injury)
  • Motor development concerns that are inconsistent with the child’s overall developmental level
  • Motor coordination difficulties affecting daily functioning

Functional challenges may include:

  • Self-care (e.g. feeding, dressing, washing)
  • School-related tasks (e.g. accessing the curriculum, tool use)
  • Play and leisure activities
  • Physical access to their educational environment

We do not accept referrals for:

  • Sensory Assessments: Schools are encouraged to make use of the Sensory Toolkit, which is available for all educational settings to access and implement: Sensory Processing Needs Toolkit - Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, ICS
  • Children whose primary area of difficulty relates to emotional and/or behavioural problems.
  • Wheelchair
  • Splinting/helmets
  • Established general learning disability
  • Specific hand therapy
  • Referrals for children who require advice and assessment for equipment and/or adaptations for home.
