The Hatherton Centre is a 47 bedded Medium Secure unit, for male mentally disordered offenders, sited within St Georges Hospital Stafford.
At the Hatherton Centre we aim to provide a therapeutic but homely environment for service users through a comprehensive range of services, including intensive care, high dependency and rehabilitation wards.
Newport House - An intensive care unit with 8 beds, all rooms en-suite
Ashley House - Admission and discharge unit 13 beds
Radford House - Admission and discharge unit 16 beds
Norton House - Rehabilitation unit 12 beds.
As a recovery orientated secure mental health service, our aim is to work with individuals to develop the knowledge and skills to enable them to live fulfilling lives on their eventual discharge.

We are now moving to a functionalised Model of Care. All of the wards will now have one Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) providing care. We think that this will bring more consistency to people’s treatment, be more supportive to the ward staff, and have the overall effect of reducing the length of stay in our service.
Newport House, our Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, will continue in its present form, there is already just one MDT looking after the patients, who are admitted here because they have complex needs until they are ready to go to a less structured environment. Dr Belshaw is the Consultant.
Ashley House and Radford House will now have only one Multi-Disciplinary Team providing care to the patients throughout their admission. The idea is that patients will be admitted to either ward, complete all of their treatment on that ward, then be discharged from that ward. For all this time they will be under the care of the same Doctor and Multi-Disciplinary Team. Dr Ray is the Consultant for Ashley and Dr Agarwal is the Consultant for Radford.
This replaces the approach that involved a change in most of the Team every time the person moved wards.
Norton House will remain our pre-discharge ward, it will now have just one Multi-Disciplinary Team and will become an admitting/discharging ward in the future. Dr Tovey is the Consultant for Norton.
We have let the patients in our service know about these changes, there will be some changes to the composition of the MDTs and there will be a process where patients can ask to move wards and teams if required.
Ellesmere House is a 12 bed service for men of working age who have a learning disability and needs which warrant the provision of care in a low secure setting. The ward has an open plan day area where patients can spend time relaxing and watching TV or playing games such as table football or cards. The ward office is situated centrally to the day area to enable safe observation and to enable staff to be responsive to the needs of patients.
Each patient has their own bedroom with en-suite shower room. Within the bedroom they have a fitted wardrobe, desk and bed. Patients are encouraged to personalise their rooms and make them comfortable. The limitations to this will be fully explained upon admission.
The ward has a fully operational occupational therapy department where patients can access a variety of activities and facilities. There is a fully functioning multi-gym and an instructor within the ward. The occupational therapy department also provide opportunities for patients to explore their creative ability by inviting people into the ward to assist with music and art projects. Patients are able to access the internet and are encouraged to develop IT skills under the guidance of the staff team.
The service offers a full multi-disciplinary approach to care and treatment and patients can expect some level of involvement with most, if not all disciplines. This includes nursing, psychology, responsible clinician, occupational therapy, social worker and speech and language therapy.

Visiting Ellesmere House
To visit a patient this has to be raised as a request by the patient at their Multi-Disciplinary team meeting; which happens every 2 weeks. The patient will need to provide full name, Date of Birth, address and contact number for the person they wish to visit.
Once this information is received the team will discuss the benefits, risks and any special considerations and reach a decision. Once the person has been approved by the team the ward social worker will send out a request for information from the prospective visitor. This will also include information about visiting the ward such as contraband items, visiting times and how to arrange a visit with the ward staff. It is imperative that the social worker receives the requested information on the corresponding form as no visits will be facilitated until this has been received a processed by the ward.
To arrange a visit the visitor is asked to contact the ward directly 24 hours before they wish to visit. They are asked not to do this through their relative as they will not be aware of other ward pressures and you may be turned away if you arrive without pre-planning. When you visit you must bring photographic ID with you; every time you come, and give any items you have bought for the patient to a member of staff for checking to ensure no contraband or dangerous items enter the ward.
Child visiting
There is a child visiting room available which is situated away from the main ward. Child visiting arrangements are made in line with trust policy and support with the procedures for child visiting can be found through the ward social worker.
Visiting times:
We ask that Monday to Friday visits are avoided between 9am to 6pm to enable engagement in therapy and activity
Saturday, Sunday and Bank holidays we ask that visitors avoid 12 noon to 1.30pm, 5pm to 6pm and 8pm to 8.30pm. This is for the purpose of protected meal times and to ensure adequate time to hand over information about patients between shifts.
If there are special circumstances as to why visits might need to happen between these times then special arrangements can be made via the ward social worker or the patients care coordinator.

You can access Ellesmere House from entrance 2 off of Corporation street. The ward is situated at the bottom of the site, behind the Learning Centre – Opposite Foundation House car park
The Clee Building is a 32 bedded Low Secure unit, for male mentally disordered offenders, sited within The Redwoods Centre, Shrewsbury.
At Clee we aim to provide a therapeutic but homely environment for service users through the range of services, Assessment and rehabilitation.
Yew Ward
A 12 bedded admission and assessment ward. People are admitted here when they are unwell or for assessment of their mental health needs. From here, services users may either be discharged to other facilities or move on to Willow, depending on need.
All rooms en-suite
Willow Ward
A 20 bedded rehabilitation ward that provides continuing support to people in their recovery. Many service users are assisted to increase their daily living and community skills and experience much greater independence prior to discharge.
All rooms are en-suite
Sycamore, Shared Therapy Space.
A resource shared by the 2 wards which offers opportunity for engagement in therapeutic interventions. It offers health and exercise, IT, education, horticulture, cooking and vocational based activities.
