A pleasant and safe outdoor space for Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) service users to relax and enjoy the benefits of outdoor activities has been reopened following extensive refurbishment.

MPFT colleagues on a tour of the refurbished gardens at The Redwoods Summer Festival event on the 25 JulyStaff at The Redwoods Centre in Shrewsbury identified the need to make the gardens more patient focused to help support service users in their recovery. When discussing plans for the refurbishment at community meetings, each ward identified similar needs including a necessity for walking space, an area to grow fruits and vegetables, and places for outdoor activities.

  • Before the refurbishment took place, the final design was approved by service users who provided positive feedback to the new gardens including: “I remember the way the gardens’ used to look and now this is excellent.”
  • “It’s really good to have such a nice outdoor space to use when my family visits.”
  • “To be involved in the planning was excellent and to be listened to on how our gardens should look.”

The new layout includes drainage to stop flooding in the area, which means the gardens are accessible and useable throughout the year. Future planning is underway to install artwork to further brighten the space with involvement from MPFT’s Arts for Health service who will work with patients and external artists to co-design an art installation.

Staff worked with the Trust’s Capital Delivery and Health and Safety teams to finance the project and create a successful business case to obtain the necessary charity funding needed.

Adam Chambers, Modern Matron for Acute Inpatients at The Redwoods Centre, was involved in the refurbishment and said: ”Accessible and enjoyable outdoor space provides so many benefits to our physical and mental wellbeing which is why we wanted to ensure our patients’ voices were heard so that the gardens were designed in a way that would best support them during their stay at The Redwoods Centre.”

“The positive feedback we’ve had from patients so far is really encouraging and it’s just so nice to see them getting out and enjoying time in the gardens again.”
