Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) is providing additional support to colleagues across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin treating patients with dementia who have tested positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Trust has extended its Hospital Avoidance Service in response to a request from system partners in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin to provide access to enhanced specialist support and advice for colleagues treating COVID-19 positive dementia patients.

Cathy Riley, Managing Director for MPFT’s Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Care Group said: “We have responded quickly to a request from local system partners to launch an enhanced service that provides access to additional specialist support for colleagues in the system in order to keep patients with dementia being treated for COVID-19 in their current environment.

“This will consist of specialist advice, support and intervention that will, in the main be delivered remotely via telephone or video link during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, face-to-face support can also be provided if and when required.”

Cathy added: “Moving patients with dementia can exacerbate behavioural issues and distress and we are working with colleagues to seek to avoid this.

“We are committed to supporting our partners in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin as much as possible during this challenging time.”
